SEO: How Do You Gather Links (part 1)

    Monday, January 5th, 2009

    [ad#large_rect]

In 2009, I am going to start some new series of articles here. one is about self help or self improvement as I am inviting guest bloggers here to present some quality articles, the other will be more in depth free training of Search Engine Optimization or SEO that you aware of.

Now as you may already know to succeed in any SEO, the ability of getting incoming links are the most important. so how do you get links, in this series of 7 (I think) tutorials, I am going to reveal step by step how you can build links using various methods that I am currently using. (Note: some of the points presented here may not be agreed by some “so-called” SEO gurus, but I presented here works for me and 100% white hat)

    Some HTML Basics

To start off the topics, let me do some basic HTML training. You do need to know some HTML codes if you want to do SEO yourself. While here I am just concentrating the code that let you do link building,
    namely anchored text links:

    [quickcode] <a href=”http://www.yourdomainhere.com/” title=”descriptive phrase includes keywords”> yourkeyowrdshere </a>[/quickcode]

The above code is the best way to write your HTML in order to gain most advantage of SEO. I saw someone writes <a href=”http://www.yourdomain.com”> http://www.yourdomain.com </a>
, <a href=”http://www.yourdomainhere.com”> yourkeyowrdshere </a> (without the ending forward slash), or <a href=”http://www.yourdomainhere.com/index.html”> yourkeyowrdshere </a>. Well those ways are not the best way to get the most of the links.

    Definition of links

There are lots of ways getting links but in general there are three ways:
    (1) One way links
    (2) Two ways or reciprocal links
    (3) Three ways link exchange

    One Way Links

One way links are basically you are “asking” other webmasters or webmistresses to add a link to your site without you link back to their sites. Nowadays, one way links are believed to have more weight than two ways or three ways. The reasons are perhaps, one way incoming links look more natural to search engines eyes than a reciprocal or three way links exchange. So I do recommend you build one way incoming links with your site to get maximum benefits of search engine rankings.

Two ways or reciprocal Links Exchange

Both webmasters agree to link with each other sites by adding their links at the websites. That is you link me so I link you. While this alone did work with yesterday SEO tactics, but today, you have to be careful not excessively doing it too much. In Google webmaster guidelines, it says:

“… This is in violation of Google’s webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact your site’s ranking in search results. Examples of link schemes can include: ….
Excessive reciprocal links or excessive link exchanging (“Link to me and I’ll link to you.”)”

Well, how many link exchanges will harm your site? Well, I am not sure. Google doesn’t say, but to me you should focus on real one way link building rather than rely on automatic link building link exchange schemes or scripts.

In our part 2, we will discuss briefly about 3 ways link exchange, and start to give you some methods that I am using. So stay tuned.

SEO: How do you Actually Determine The Level of Keyword Competition?

    Monday, November 24th, 2008

    [ad#large_rect]

In the world of SEO or search engine optimization, most “self proclaimed gurus” will claim that they can rank #1 or top 10 for such and such keywords in Google for may be 4 million “competition”. Well I am not saying that they can’t but are those so called “competition” are really their competitors? To look for real websites that engaged SEO techniques to drive more free traffic to their sites, used the following search engine command as a test:

    1. intitle: keyword
    2. inanchor :keyword
    3. intitle: “keyword”
    4. inanchor:”keyword”

The results returned from those commands are actually as described by Terri Wells from SEOchat.com are directly competiting with your for your keywords. But before, we explain much more about SEO competitive analysis, let me explain what those command do.

    Intitle: Keyword

The title tag as we discussed earlier, is the most important element on your on page seo effort. For example my recent web page titled “biggest firesale bonus” currently ranking #4 for that keyword. Well, I didn’t do much about it and in fact I wrote my title which starts the keyword I was aiming for plus little back links from squidoo, blogspots and wordpress and that’s it. So by using that command, you will know
exactly how many websites that are directly competing with you in the search engine space.

    inanchor: keyword

This command returns how many websites that uses the keyword in their anchored texts. This is another essential part when search optimized your site. For example, if you searched the keyword “affordable web hosting” using that command, Google returns around 6000 websites.

    intitle: “keywords” and inanchor “keywords”

For this one, it actually make no difference if you are only targeting a single word as your keyword, but if you have multiple words, which tells google, “I want three words next to each others as my search query and please don’t return me anything else”. For our example, affordable web hosting, google only returns 90 results.

Now come to the next question, does it necessary mean “affordable web hosting” is a good term to target then? It depends on the search volume then. If there is only a few, (100 say) looking for that term in search engines, you definitely don’t want to waste your effort to optimize the site where little people are going to search for. So how do we find out the search volume then? There are some tools on the market, both free and paid that offers some form of keyword analysis so that you know which terms potentially can give you more free traffic to your site! So how do you that?
next time, we will show you a video that covers three tools that I personally use when doing this search competitive analysis. so stay tuned!
