What is SEO?

SEO, an abbreviation of search engine optimization,
it’s a term of referring how relevant is your website to a particular users
search phrases on search engines such as Google & Yahoo.General speaking, the more relevant your site is, the higher your website ranks. Most search engine experts believe,
there are 2 factors that affect your website ranking to search relevancies and they are:

  • Onsite or on-page factor:
  • Offsite or off-page

We will cover some basic on page factors in this article.

When talking about on the page factor, one needs to consider the following aspects which affect your site search engine ranking:

  1. Overall site design, such as the use of flash, javascript, frames and graphics
  2. The use of ALT img tags
  3. The use of HTML heading tags that is <h1..h6>
  4. How well is/are the keywords organized
  5. How often are the search phrases appear on your site home page
  6. The use of Title and META tags of your website pages and
  7. The style of the fonts of your keywords
Let’s look at example, when you search “make money onine” on Google, the first one you come across on the natural listing
is carlocab.com. Currently, as you see on the screen shot, there are about 53 million websites about the topics “make money online” so this site did quite well
in terms of SEO.Let’s look at example, when you search “make

money online” on Google, the first one you come across on the natural listing
is carlocab.com. Currently, as you see on the screen shot, there are about 53 million websites about the topics “make money online” so this site did quite well
in terms of SEO.

Let’s open up the source HTML code to see what he did in terms on site factor. To do that, on your browser (IE or firefox) point your mouse to “view” -> “source code” click on it and a new windows is pop’ed up. This the so called source HTML file. A HTML file is a formating language to decide how a web page looks on your Internet Explorer for instance.

Ok, Let’s look back on how well carlocab.com is organized in terms of SEO onsite factor.First let’s count how many time does the keyword “make money online” appears on this page. It’s about eleven times excluding keywords where it says “title=make money online …”.If you do the same exercise with me, you will find, “make money online” actually does appear in bold, underline, italic format and also appears in the web page title, META description and the meta keywords tag. That fulfill what I said in point 2 and 5 above. Now, what are those title and META tags are? The title tag, thought to be the most important on-page factor in achieving high search engine ranking. It tells both user and search engine what this website is all about. For our example, carlocab.com, the topic obviously is about “making money online”. Now, Let’s look at META description. It said “Discover how a 13 year made money online. Make money online topics include….” It tells you more about the website. 1.) how a 13 year earn money.. 2.) what topics does he cover on his website.Let me give you an analogy, of both Title and META description really are. One day you want to go your local favorite bookstore and look for books about “how do you invest in stock market?”. So you walk to the finance and economics, investment or something similar and look for the most appropriate books. You won’t just pick up any book and flip, you will find the most appropriate one, right?
so what do you do? First I will scan through books’ title to see if is about stock investment. If it is, then I will pick it up and scan through the table of contents.
If the table of contents match my expectation then I will flip it.Back to our site example, first we search for information by typing some keywords on search engines. (walks to the right section of our bookstore’s analogy)
When the engine returns you results that match query, you will start scanning through which one is the most interesting or most relevant.
(assuming the search engine always return the most relevant search results)
Right? Then how do you decide which one is the most interesting or suits your queries? You read through the sites descriptions! (that is read through the table of content). If it is a perfect match, you will
click on it and read more (flipping the pages). Therefore it is important for you to write the right title & META description tag!Next week we will talk about how a site with full flash, graphics and the image ALT tags affect your website search ranking. Also we will discuss some
aspect of off-site factors.
