Common mistake
| Yesterday, after I read a blog’s post about SEO, it mentioned something that I think worth while talking about here: Why some websites got ranked #1 on Google but their sales suck? For those who don’t know SEO or search engine optimization is about, let me spend a few moment explaining it briefly here: SEO is a technique that helps websites to achieve higher search engine ranking basically by |
designing a more search engine friendly website layout and structure, and writing a better keywords (those words you type on Google, Yahoo or MSN search boxes) targeted website copy.
Heart of Online Business – Keyword Research
Keyword research should play the most important part when doing a online business. No matter you are trying to get your website visitors by means of SEO or trying to find groups of hungry buyers that searching for your product. Without choosing the RIGHT keywords, you’re putting your online business in vein.
Let’s say you have an online business about selling some weight loss programs that concentrating on fitness training. Now, how do you find the most appropriate keywords for your website? Just “weight loss programs” or “fitness weight loss programs”?. In the SEO world, most Gurus will tell you to choose the set of key phrase that have larger search volumes but have little competition. That’s may be true but in most cases people are just concerning if it brings result. If the weight loss program (let’s assume it’s FDA approved and make no harm to the human bodies), can bring results, most people will just follow. No matter, it is a diet one, fitness one, and so on. Therefore, to me, I’ll find one who has the most search volumes no matter it has more competition or not. However, just in case people are searching for nutrition weight loss programs, I will add them on my website copy.
Therefore when choosing keywords, the most searched one should be your main focus, other than that it acts a supplemental.
Therefore, why these webmasters fail to make any sales reason No.1 perhaps lacking of keyword focused.
Reason no.2 that I can think of is, their website copies are not good enough to close the sales or it does not excite the search engine users to click on your listing. The reasons for that are often in terms of search engines, many webmasters are too lazy to put on an appropriate title, META descriptions or META keywords tags on their websites. They just put things liks “XYZ Company”, “DigitalCamera.com” on the site’s titles and that is! Unless your XYZ company is a very famous one, otherwise who knows what your company is selling/providing etc? You should add more words to best describe your company products or services in the limited amount of space. (Google displays maximum of 64 characters on the title tag and anything longer than that shows e.g “Digital Cameras Revie…” at the end on the search engine results listing)
Back to our example of “weight loss programs”, the more appropriate title will be
“Weight Loss Fitness Programs – Lose weight in a Healthy Way”.
so the second point is writing a better title for your website helps achieving in higher click through rate. Thus may result higher sales.
So next time, before you set up a web business, perhaps you know find out which keywords you want to focus first, then you build the website.
I hope these information helps.
