Make Money Online: Do You Really Need To Build A List In Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing thought to be one of the easiest way to make money online. Why? Because one doesn’t need to create a product or service. All you have to do is find a profitable niche, a profitable product and drive endless amount of traffic to the merchant website and that’s it! You’ve got money in your pocket!

Is it true? Well that was what I thought at the beginning when I started out to make money online. Why you need an autoresponder? Why need to build a list? Why so clumsy? As I got more experience and losing out money in this affiliate marketing thing, I began to realize that was something I didn’t do right. I began to think to myself, I saw so many people succeed online and why I am not the person? So I started to listen to what the gurus said the money is in the list!.

If you were an insurance agent or some kind of sales person in the past, you will know this concept very well. But just in case you are not, imagine a moment you were. And in every sales industry there is a concept called quota. You need to meet a certain sales quota per month to secure your job. Imagine a moment your boss says you need 10 sales to stay in your job by the end of this month. Today is 20th of the month but you have no sales. So you begin to think to yourself how on earth you can make those sales?

What you need to do? The answer I can tell you is you need to meet potential clients. You need to meet them and explain your proposal to them before you have any chance to convert them into sales.

So how do you get clients. If you have some sort of contact list, this will be easy, just pick up a phone and contact them one by one. But If you don’t have a list, then you need to make cold call. That is calling some one that you don’t know and never meet before.

Now, If you ask any experienced sales person, they will generally say cold calling is much harder than speaking to a person that you have already known and have relationship with (such as your friends, or relatives). Because the person you cold call, might well just hanged up at the moment you speak to them I myself did have some experience of being a sales and cold call to someone that I didn’t know. This is in reality they would do just that, hang up. Never give you any chance to speak with them. Right?

So what does this analogy have to do with affiliate marketing or make money online?

First, we are humans. Humans act exact the same way no matter they are online or offline. When your site visitors arrive to the merchant sites that tries to sell them something, they will just act like the person that you are cold calling. They will just shut their minds and not listen to what the page is saying to them because they don’t trust you nor the merchant. They don’t know you nor the merchant, and you are just trying to get their money out of their pocket! So what do they do? Close that page and move on to something interesting.

At that time, the smart merchant may try to offer a free gift to the site visitor in return for their name and contact email address before they leave but you? You don’t have anything as an affiliate marketer. Once you drive direct traffic to the merchant site, you leave nothing. No money, no leads, nothing!

So by capturing that lead before you drive traffic to the merchant, you give your subscriber’s a chance
to know you better. As you remember what most experienced salesperson said at the beginning? “Cold calling prospects is generally harder to convert them in to sales than a person you have already met or have relationship with. Since they know you much better and generally will trust you more than a stranger that tries to sales them!”

So in conclusion, building a list of email subscribers will give more chance your prospects to know you more
so that they can trust you when comes to ordering something that you recommend online.
