When talking about the secret of pay per click advertising, a thing one has to do is split (A/B) or multi-variate test their landing pages. But what a landing page is? According to wikipedia, a landing page defines as:

In online marketing a landing page, sometimes known as a lead capture page, is the page that appears when a potential customer clicks on an advertisement or a search-engine result link. The page will usually display content that is a logical extension of the advertisement or link, and that is optimized to feature specific keywords or phrases for indexing by search engines.

In pay per click (PPC) campaigns, the landing page will also be customized to measure the effectiveness of different advertisements. By adding a parameter to the linking URL, marketers can measure advertisement effectiveness based on relative click-through rates.

But now what is A/B testing or multivariate testing?

A/B or split testing

In this set up, basically you have 2 versions of your landing page with a slight variations on the pages. The most common variations perhaps are the page headline, and the P.s. attached at the end of the page. The reasons are there are most read by your visitors and there are places where statistically proven affect your conversion in a great deal.

Multivariate testing

While A/B testing you will only test a single element, in multivariate testing you will test different elements on a single page in a given time. However, as a general rule of thumb, you will only apply multivariate testing if the page is receiving 1,000 or more page views per week.

The purposes of multi-variate or split testing are simple they are there to test how well you improve your sales or email newsletter sign up conversion. This is important because as an advertiser you want to get every bit of your every advertising dollar spent so how do you set up such a testing?

Setting Up testing environment

This article assumes you are using Google Adwords. If you haven’t signed up, you can signed up at the link above. Ok, now to set up a test you need to have the following ready:

At least two versions of your landing page

Your conversion page (thank for purchasing, subscribing page)

After you’ve got this ready, you need to login to your adwords account and set up the Google website optimizier.

Later on I’ll show you how to set up the Google optimizer so please stay tuned.

Last time, we talked about two successful tips to set up a PPC advertising campaign. This time we will cover other three:

Not Using A Targeted Landing Page

A landing page is basically the web page arrived when users click on the PPC ads but specifically designed to have higher sales or sign up conversion. For example, as shown in the picture on the right. It is a type of landing page where my web visitors will get a free keyword tool when they visit this site.

OK. To be successful in any PPC campaigns, you need a targeted one. That is you have tailored the web page to match what you offer in your ads. Not just the home page of your site but a specific page. For example, if I set up a PPC campaign for my free keyword software, I will NOT set up and ad to my blog home page because it is irrelevant. My blog home page always shows some useful article but it is NOT what the search engine users want to see. They want to download my free keyword tool right? So a specific landing page relevants to what you offer in your ad is important.

Bidding on Locations Where Your Business Is Out Of Reach

Do you know you can set up locations in your Adwords, Yahoo sponsored search or MSN ad Center accounts? Well let’s face it if you are only delivering flowers in Chicago, what’s the point to show your PPC ads to searchers in Boston? Today, I still see some webmasters are doing things like that. Unless you want to expand your business otherwise I do not recommend you doing this!

Not Enough Testing

PPC advertising is just a numbers game. The secret is really test, test and test again! But make sure you test only one variable at a time. For example, you can set up two similar ads with a bidding keyword but only changes the headline little bit. Once you’ve found a better clicks ads, you can now test your landing page copy with different headlines, subheadlines etc. When you testing your landing page, make sure you have a testing code installed as well. Google has one when comes to conversion tracking.

That is for today, I will show you more tips about make money online later on show stay tuned!

This is the first post I use a different Adsense style which I think it works better than the older ones which showed ad at the top with no texts that wrapped around. Anyway, back to today’s topic but first let me give you some reasons on why you should start a PPC campaign.

Why PPC?

PPC is an effective way to get your site noticed at no time because you don’t have to wait for long time SEO effort to get some decent traffic. As discussed earlier one webmaster or webmistress should perform some PPC to their sites before committing themselves to free SEO traffic.

Setting A Successful PPC Campaign

I have heard so many webmasters including myself that spend thousand of dollars with their PPC campaigns but they got eventually little sales or little news letter subscription so what’s wrong?
Mainly some basic analysis, there are five points I’d like to point out with a successful PPC campaigns and they are:

Too little keywords

Bidding keywords do not appear anywhere else in your site

Not Using a Targeted Landing Page

Bidding Keywords do not appear in your ad copy

Not enough testing

Those 5 points are the main reasons why people failed in their PPC campaign. Let’s tackle one by one here.

5 Reasons On Why Most PPC failed

1.) Too little keywords – Many people think if they bid little words, so the cost is minimum but the conversion will be great. Well, ideally yes. It was definitely what I thought in the past. However, to get this work, you have to get a very accurate keyword research tool. In the realistic world it doesn’t happen unfortunately. So you have to bid as many keywords as possible at start. However you don’t blindly bid keywords and you will choose those that are relevant to what your product or service is offering.

2.) Bidding Keywords Do Not Appear Anywhere in Your Site – This is very important because Google always wants to show the most relevant ads to their searchers.

One way to determine if your ad is relevant to their searchers is to examine whether your bidding keywords shown on the landing page or not. If there are Google will be happy to show your ads more since you help Google to increase its searches user experience. So it is very important that you have the bidding keywords shown on your landing page but still I see so many webmasters day by day are getting this wrong. So don’t do it or your will be penalized or simply not shown at all.

Ok, we have talked about 2 points today, next time I will show you the remaining three points so stay tuned!
